The cubs will be having their first sleepover of the year next Friday night, 8th of March and will have some challenges to complete on Saturday.    Cubs should come to the Den at the usual time Friday night with their sleeping bags, mats and teddy bears!

Other camps coming up in the next few months:

1)      Our first weekend away will be to the Log cabin, Kinnity Friday April 5th – 7th.  This is an indoor venue but we will be outdoors on forest roads with a river and lots of muck, so cubs will need outdoor gear and wellies.   We will be getting a bus from the Den at 7:15 on the Friday, return time on Sunday to be confirmed.

2)      Cub county camp is being held in Clara behind the den the weekend immediately after the Log cabin trip, 12- 14th April.  This will be a outdoor camping event, so warm clothes and good raingear will be essential.  More details on this shortly.

3)      Larch Hill this year will be the June Bank Holiday weekend, this is a three night camp and everyone always has a great time.  The theme this year will be Alice in Wonderland, so start thinking about your costumes!

23rd March

Cubs braved the dark to try out a night hike on the new boardwalk on Clara bog tonight, it was twilight when we got there and dark when we returned to Den.  With the clocks changing next week we’re looking forward to getting longer out of our evenings 🙂 Tonight we learned a bit more about finding our bearings, the importance of landmarks and direction.     Our older cubs shared some Larch Hill experiences with our newer cubs while we planned what we can do on annual camp there this year.

16th March

Cubs got ready for marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade this week.  A little bit of drill practice helps everyone remember what to do.  We were very impressed with our newest cubs and their ability to hold their own in the marching orders game.

9th March

A night for planning and scheming – when we go on our two night camp in April what do we cook, and how?   Ambitious plans to cook whole deer, I think that might have to wait..

2nd March

Hiking and singing scout songs, loudly!

24 February

We’re in Egypt now, so we learned a little about drought and the importance of water for growing things and made grass heads.   CVubs have brought them hope to keep them watered and figure a way to give them costumes.  In a couple of weeks they should make a very impressive photo gallery, looking forward to seeing them all 🙂

——————-

(apologies for the break in the logs, we’ll backfill them soon)

——————-

November 4th –

More medieval pursuits this week, with cubs trying their hands at potato and block printing.  We reviewed everything we’ve done so far this year and had a discussion about how we’re finding the new programme (go far, so good)  and how we’re going to work activity and personal skills badges

October 28th

The great Hallowe’en Feast – There was vast quantities of sugar, sparklers and every six performed a little something to keep us all entertained.    The costumes were, as always, fantastic, well done all!

October 21st –

More party planning this week, the practical stuff as the cubs brought pumpkins and spent the greater part of the evening scooping out their insides and designing their faces.  These were amazing, we have some extremely talented Cubs in Clara 🙂

October 14th

Some party planning this week as the sixes decided how best to organise to throw their annual Hallowe’en party and then the sixes got together to work on their identity, name, their patrol box, and to explore their new programme books.    So far so good with the new programme, everyone’s giving it the thumbs up.

October 7th

More Medieval life this week as the cubs designed their own crests, and used them to enter the lists for water jousting.   We tried to keep in keeping with the manners of the day and to learn a little of the social history that went along with these great events.

Sept 30th 2011

Our cubs had some fun bringing history to life this week, we discussed armour, medieval living conditions and warfare before the cubs divided into two groups (defenders and attackers) to plan their parts in the storming of the castle.  Lots of lessons all around as many poor cubs met their terrible ends (to balled up newspapers and foam weapons).  We discussed how we can have an even better exercise when the evenings get longer again and we can (hopefully) enlist the help of scouts and ventures to build something bigger to defend and attack.
Sept 23rd 2011

This week was full of mini explosions as the cubs took film canisters outside to set off  pop rockets with the power of effervescent vitamin tablets.  Cubs got to try and figure out the optimum vitamin tablet/water/air ratio to get the highest flight with loudest pop.  As dusk made the lids hard to find we went back to play games and test our wits and senses figuring out what mysterious things Christine had at the bottom of a black bag.   The cubs have chosen to explore Medieval Times as their next destination, so next week should be interesting!

Sept 16th 2011

This week was a preliminary taste of warrior training  – we tried archery in the camping field (so far animals are probably safe from these particular hunters, but given a bit more time and practice we reckon there’s a William Tell or two in Clara.)   Well done to all for being safety aware and for paying attention to the instructions given, that’s what we like to see.    As it gre dark we headed back in for team on team dodgeball… all that practice aiming seems to have paid off 🙂

Sept 9th 2011

The cubs were back for their first night after the summer break tonight.  We talked a little about the new programme and some of the ideas we want to explore to plan over the next few weeks and then the Cubs turned Nature Detectives.  Armed with identifier sheets the cubs ventured out to tick off leaves and seeds in the Camping field and next door in the Aspire/Clara House Demesne.  They were challenged to find as many of the common native trees as they could, including oak, ash, sycamore, birch, horse chestnut, alder, elder, hawthorn and beech.  Well done to Matthew for identifying the most correctly, followed closely by Darragh and Amber.

The Cub Scout pack is made up of boys and girls from 9 to 12 years of age divided into small groups called sixes.  Cubs have more responsibility and more say in the running of what they do than Beavers, as they learn to look after themselves and to look out for others.  Cubs are encouraged to work as a team, to recognise that everyone comes to the group with different talents that help to make the pack stronger, better and more able for anything they’re challenged to do.

Cubs will work on skills in the traditional outdoor “scouty” areas like

  • Air
  • Backwoods
  • Camping
  • Emergencies
  • Hillwalking
  • Paddling
  • Pioneering
  • Rowing
  • Sailing

Being outdoors and learning about nature and how to live well with it is what scouting is all about.  Cubs will camp outdoors for a few nights each year.  Cubs learn about their environment, their community and how to value teamwork and responsibility.

Some activities Cubs participated in last year include:

  • hikes
  • tie dying
  • minibeast safaris (insect hunting)
  • cooking toad in the hole and twist outdoors
  • tallest flagpole challenge
  • pizza making
  • sandcasting
  • Science experiments
  • fire lighting skills
  • football/volleyball
  • swimming
  • mental challenges
  • knots and map reading skills
  • games
  • visit to see how a lifeboat operates
  • 3 night camping at Larch Hill
  • 2 night sleepover in Arklow Sea Scout Den
