County Cub Camp, Clara

Cubs from all over Slieve Bloom met in Clara in April to try their hands at backwoods cooking, pioneering, swimming, campfire singing and camping in some interesting weather. We hope everyone had a good time, we know our cubs did. :)

Log Cabin Trip April 5th – 7th 2013

The cubs haven’t been to the Log Cabin for a while, so there was a great element of mystery about the trip for most of them. We set off Friday night in great spirits and there was only a *little* adventure on the way. After food and the usual ~~fights~~ spirited discussions over who got to sleep where we went on a night hike, under a particularly beautiful night sky (which we had to lie down to properly appreciate, of course). There was some under bridge exploration, satellite spotting and some cubs still seemed to think they were quiet enough to see deer along the way. I think coming down through the trees, ankle deep in leaves, was most cubs’ highlight of the weekend. Hiking up to the Lime Kiln, finding antlers along the way, was good, cooking some lunch was better. Hiking back through the trees was voted *lots* better than the road walk. We experimented with colouring hard boiled eggs (with onion skins, red cabbage and tumeric), the cubs ventured out into the dark to solve clues on the Light Hike and we played the ever popular Werewolves, as well as river activities and swings the Ventures sorted for us.

We want to thank the cubs that prepared our dinner Saturday, they did a great job, and special thanks to the Venture scouts that came to help out, definitely a fantastic job, much appreciated.

Camping season well underway

We’ve had very successful Beaver sleepovers, the Cubs and Scouts have been away to the Log Cabin, Kinnity and County Camp is in Clara this weekend, it’s all go in 2nd Offaly in what’s shaping up to be a busy camping season. Hope everyone has fun!

Colour Party, St. Patrick’s Day

Thanks to everyone who played a part in the Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade Colour Party, it’s a great tradition going back a long time in Clara and it’s great to see it every year.

Beavers on parade

We wanted to say thanks to all the Beavers (and Cubs, Scouts and Ventures, of course) who made it to our annual St Patrick’s Day parade turnout. It was a cold and wet one, but they did us proud, with smiles all round. Well done all!

Beaver Sleepover a Huge Success

Great fun was had at our recent Beaver sleepover with our younger beavers, with plenty to do and we even managed to get some sleep

Cub Sleepover next Friday 8th March

The cubs will be having their first sleepover of the year next Friday night, 8th of March and will have some challenges to complete on Saturday. Cubs should come to the Den at the usual time Friday night with their sleeping bags, mats and teddy bears!

Other camps coming up in the next few months:

1) Our first weekend away will be to the Log cabin, Kinnity Friday April 5th – 7th. This is an indoor venue but we will be outdoors on forest roads with a river and lots of muck, so cubs will need outdoor gear and wellies. We will be getting a bus from the Den at 7:15 on the Friday, return time on Sunday to be confirmed.

2) Cub county camp is being held in Clara behind the den the weekend immediately after the Log cabin trip, 12- 14th April. This will be a outdoor camping event, so warm clothes and good raingear will be essential. More details on this shortly.

3) Larch Hill this year will be the June Bank Holiday weekend, this is a three night camp and everyone always has a great time. The theme this year will be Alice in Wonderland, so start thinking about your costumes!

Preparation for Log Cabin

The Scout section are currently preparing for a weekend trip to the Log Cabin in Kinnitty during the first week in March. Meal planning and route cards are underway as are other planned activities. All we need now is the weather.
